Bacon, part 2

Me: "How to Make an Origami Pig."
Greg: That's always useful. Especially if you want origami bacon.

Bacon, part 1

Greg: Sarah?
Me: Yes?
Greg: I found the bacon flowchart. Sean had it on his del.icio.us account.
Me: Thank god for social networking.

Retiree, getting cookie: Im gonna be bigger than a house.

Me: Hooray! No weigh-ins!

Retiree: Youre right! *gets additional cookie*

Blocked!

Me: Hey, a new feature! When I hover over a URL that is blocked, it tells me before I click on it. Thats actually hella useful.

Mike: Thats awesome. Does it have the reason there? Blocked: Irony.

Me: Blocked: Too fun.

Mike: Blocked: Cuz. We dont have to tell you. :P

Me: Blocked: Neener.

Mike: Blocked: Shouldnt you go outside and get some exercise?

Different Definitions of "Fulfillment"

Me: I used to take pictures of people posing with costumed characters full time.
Guy Dressed as Frosty the Snowman: Well, that could be fulfilling.
Me: No. No, it can't.

Glucoboy

Mike: Can I just say how amused I am that we are discussing an actually existing product that combines diabetes glucose screening and video games in one convenient package for children?

Meeting Site Selection

Me: Out of curiosity, whats the bands usual hotel in King of Prussia?

Darrin: Crown Plaza or Fairfield Inn. There are many more in the area.

Me: Well, sure. Its that giant black hole of a mall, sucking in the orbiting hotel chains like errant space junk.

Darrin: At the speed of light.

Thank you, good night!

Bill: My goal is a retirement speech completely devoid of personal pronouns.

Me: I say new policy: for your retirement speech, you get one word for every year youve been here. Twenty-four years, twenty-four words.

Some Targets Are Just Too Easy

Bill, after a particularly notable retirement ceremony: You should charge people to get on your blog today.

Poopy!

Me: An idiot trombone player (note redundancy) is changing his childs diaper on the floor in front of my desk. Notably, the bathrooms are right across the hall. Hello?

Mike: Yeah, see? See?? Babies make peoples brains go away. Its universal. Babies are brain-eating zombies.

How Not To Scam Music From the Field Band Library

Technique 1, attempted Wednesday afternoon by a community band director: Call the Field Band, complain that every time you call the Field Band, the Field Band never sends you anything, explaining that thats why this time Im calling you. That is, the Field Band. Then ask for something that went out of print 20 years before the Field Band existed. Act disgusted when told it is not in the library.

Technique 2, attempted Friday morning by a high school band director: Demand, repeatedly, that the Field Band send you music the Field Band doesnt have. When directed to call a band 20 miles away with a library five times larger than that of the Field Band, explain that the Field Band should send the music (that the Field Band doesnt have) because were right down the street from you. When reminded that the Field Band still doesnt have this music, ask well, what DO you have?! Hang up.

Technique 3, attempted last month by a high school band director: Tell the Field Band to send you a copy of a score that you have on order from overseas, to cover you while its in transit. When the Field Band replies that this is fine, but due to previous abuse of this copyright loophole, you will need to send proof of the order, admit that you dont really have it on order at all, you just lost it. When the Field Band explains that the cover copies for music on order loophole only works when you actually have music on order, assert that you kind of have it on order. When asked again for proof, admit again that you dont have it on order at all.

Past techniques:

- point out that since the tune exists on a recording of the Marine Band, it must therefore be in the Field Band library.

- assert over and over that the tune is permanently out of print, even when a new edition has come out in the past six months.

- legally borrow a tune from the Field Band, then offer to sell the set on a listserv the Field Band reads.

Your Aspect Ratio and You

LTC: Can you blow it up more?

Me: This is a big as I can make it.

LTC: What if you cut off the stuff on the top and bottom?

Me: Thats as wide as it can go, so thats as big as I can make it.

LTC: But they dont need this stuff down here.

Me: Yes, but thats as wide as it can go, so thats as big as I can make it.

LTC: They just need this one strip through the middle.

Me: Right, but thats as wide as it can go, so thats as big as I can make it.

LTC: So if you cut off the bottom part

Me: It would still only be that wide. So thats as big as I can make it.

LTC: Really?

Me: Yes.

LTC: Huh.

Me: It's unlistenable!

Me: That's jazz.
Greg: That is jazz. Jazz is pig death.

Logic

Me: I thought Martians were small and gray-green.

David: Its pretty sunny there. People that live in sunny places are brown. Martians = brown.

Me: Its too far from the sun. People who freeze turn blue. Martians = blue.

David: Alright, summer highs are only 20 Celsius. Thats not real warm, but theres no cloud cover to speak of. Martians = brown on the outside, blue in the middle. The way I like my cheese.

Me: Yes. I need an AACR2.
Librarian 1: *blank stare* Is that...a book?
Me: Yes.
Librarian 1: Um... *typing* I don't see anything.
Me: Really.
Librarian 1: Does it...stand for something?
Me: Anglo-American Cataloging...something.
Librarian 1: Anglo-American!
Me: Yes. *having found photocopy of title page* Here: Anglo-American Cataloging Rules.
Librarian 1: Um... *typing* I don't think we have one in circulation.
Me: It wouldn't circulate. It would be reference. Reference for...well, you.
Librarian 1: *looking helpless* Maybe when Librarian 2 gets off the phone...I mean...we don't really catalog here...maybe when Librarian 2 gets off the phone...
Me: Okay.
Librarian 2: What's up?
Librarian 1: Have you ever heard of something called Anglo-American Cataloging Rules?
Librarian 2: Um... I've heard of it. I don't think I've ever seen one. We don't really catalog here.
Librarian 1: That's what I told her!
Me: Okay.
Librarian 2: Um...is it online?
Me: With a subscription.
Librarian 2: Oh. We...don't really catalog here.

Marriage Advice from the Voice of Experience

Mike: Marriage is really just a series of blackmails and mutually-assured-destruction treaties.
Me: *sniff* That's beautiful. Can you cross-stitch that for me?
Mike: Hmmm...might be too late to have it completed by your wedding. Perhaps for your 1st Anniversary, which I believe is, traditionally, the "Self Deception" Anniversary. That or Paper.
Me: When's "Loathing," then? Second?
Mike: Oh, no, I think it's like 8 or 9. "Plotting" is traditionally 10, so it's shortly before that.
Me: *pfft* Like we’d make it that far. I'm hoping for four...what's that, "Petty Annoyance?"
Mike: That's three. Four is "Escalating Frustration," with the traditional gift being a poke in the eye.
Me: A gift I give every day.
Mike: Well then how will it be special on year 4?
Me: Manicure!
Mike: See there, you're gonna do just fine.

The Boss

Greg: Anne is really nice. She will make you feel that what you have to say is interesting and she wants to listen to it.
Me: So the opposite of me, then.
Greg: *look askance* Maybe.

Spot the Mathematician!

Greg: Mathematicians try to have order in their lives, so you might notice that in their attire. Computer scientists try to be more punk. So this is a computer scientist outfit instead of a mathematician one.
Me: What are you going to do about it?
Greg: Nothing.
Me: What if people mistake you for a computer scientist?
Greg: I'll get all up in their faces.
Me: But if you get all up in their faces, you won't be a mathematician.
Greg: Oh, you're right. I'll be all up in their shoes.

Novel in a Month

Laura: I wrote a young adult novel because I actually know someone who works in publishing and that's what they suggested. It was about this girl whose id kind of pops out of her body and follows her around. He was a little demon guy who looked like [my boyfriend].
Jake: So if the id looks like [boyfriend], what do the ego and super ego look like?
Me: Well, one of them wears a cape.
Jake: Obviously.

That Certain Something

Me: I've printed two of the arranger candidates' parts so far, and they both use Finale's "Maestro" font for the band and chorus arrangements, and "Jazz" for the jazz and rock band arrangements.

HI to MD

Mike: Our waiter amused us. He was good, and very friendly, but when Jen ordered the venison he mentioned how before he moved to Maryland and got that job, he'd never heard of venison. Naturally we were all puzzled as to where one has to come from to not have heard of venison. And the answer would be Maui, where they have no deer. We then spent the next five minutes joking about how someone leaves Maui to move to Ellicott City, MD. We determined that he just couldn't deal with the paradise anymore and needed to get in the rat race, fast.
Me: "God, if I have to look at one more palm tree, I swear I'm gonna lose it"
Mike: "I'm so sick of this pristine white beach. What I wouldn't do to be in a cubicle!"
Me: "*sigh* If only I could find out how badly people drive in snow."
Mike: "This infernal tropical weather is unbearable. If only I could go somewhere dreary and overcast."
Me: "Why must everyone be so laid back?!"
Mike "My dream has always been to sell this surf shop and go work on Wall Street."
Me: "I'm tired of looking at hula girls."

Assumptions

Mike: I saw on your blog you accused him of cheating. I assume that was at the tournament. Is there a story there?
Me: I accused Patrick of cheating. Does it say Greg instead? No, it says Patrick. You're hallucinating again.
Mike: I just naturally assumed that if you were accusing someone of cheating, it would be Greg. Don't read too much into that.
Me: I think I might take the opportunity to read too much into that. Because it’s funny.
Mike: I didn't mean it in the adulterous way. Just in the way that if you're competing with Greg at something, I assume you would be accusing him of cheating. And also that you would be justified, because he would be cheating. 'Course, I never said that.

A Fair Question

Dave: So how long before this weekend ends up on your blog?

Sunday, March 25, 2007

It's Only a Game

Me: You are Poopy McCheaterhead.

Greg: No, it's W-O-O-K-I-E-E.
Me: Okay, I kill you now.
Greg: It's true!
Me: Immaterial. I kill you now.

I'm Not a Mathematician, But I Play One on TV

Greg: Mathematicians do not give retribution.
Me: Not in this dimension, at least.
Greg: No, not in any dimension. Mathematicians give passive aggression.
Me: Okay, fine, whatever.
Greg: What?
Me: Oh, nothing.

Specificity

Greg: Mathematicians, being mathematicians, will not overgeneralize.
Me: Ah! All mathematicians will not...wait...

He Can Be Taught!

Greg: My syringe is not a writing implement.
Me: That's so true.
Greg: Nor can I inject things into myself with a pencil.

Noisemaking

Me: *series of decreasingly Chewbacca-like noises*
Greg: No, that sounds like a goat.
Me: Chewbacca sounds like a goat.
Greg: No! Chewbacca sounds like a wookie!
Me: Okay, you're totally fired.
Greg: I know any number of geeks who would agree with me.
Me: Now you're just trying to get on the blog.
Greg: No, I'm not.
Me: Well, you're gonna be.
Greg: Damnit!

How To Achieve Job Satisfaction

Comment on Jake's Blog: You just have to change your objective from "getting something accomplished" to "maximize evil wastage of time" and then you'll be a winner!

And 502!

Mike: Hurray, I'm #500! I rule. Me and the shoggoths. (Spell checker also suggests "shogunates," which should also not be confused.)

Ceiling Cat!

Emmy: There's a cat in the ceiling.
Sean: We have Paul to thank for that.
Paul (poking ceiling tiles with trident): I did not put the cat in the ceiling. I don't know what would make you think that.
Sean: Perhaps it was the elaborate plan you detailed earlier, about how to get a Ceiling Cat.

Lovecraft Didn't Have This Problem

Mike: For "Shoggoths," my spell checker suggests "Visigoths" and "Golgotha." Which are both very different things.

500th post!

Mike: This coral looks like a brain. Just put that in.

Mike: John Rhys-Davies versus John Rhys-Davies: who would win?
Jen: We all would!

Maybe not exactly that excuse

COL: Man, I need to get going.
Me: Oh, you'll never leave. It took Eddie an hour to leave, and he had an excuse.
COL: Yeah, he had the ticking clock: $10 an hour babysitter.
Greg: You need an excuse like that, sir.
COL, after consideration: No, thanks.

I hope it was the snow

David: I just need four more inches of this so I can go home.
Me: I don't want to know what you were pointing at when you said that.
David: Use your imagination.

LTC C: I completely forgot about a change of clothes.
Me: Oh, you love that outfit.
LTC C: You're right. I hate to take it off.
COL H: He has another one he sleeps in.

Me: [announce weight loss of X pounds]
Greg: [announce weight loss of 2X pounds]
Me: [expletive]

Self Knowledge

COL: I submitted your recommendation letter yesterday.
Me: Oh, good. Thank you, sir.
COL: So if you don't get accepted...
Me: It's not your fault.
COL: No, it probably is. "Couldn't she find anyone who can write?"

Frame shop employee: I'm going to trim just a bit off of the top here.
Me: *gasp* Those ceiling tiles are vital to the composition!

Who Says Americans are Monolingual?

Teresa: Haben sie eine numero pour questa...musica?

The Fitness Gap

Mike: Dude, guys don't even know half the time when they've lost weight. But it's okay, because they also don't know when they've gained it. Until their pants don't fit anymore. Not that they won't go right on wearing them.

Boy Theatre Genius!

Me: That's a 1940's comic book not waiting to happen.
Mike: Hilarious. Who would his side-kick be--or rather the hero to whom he is side-kick? "Cole Porter: Ultra-Fop!" or perhaps "The Gershwinian: Protector of Pianists!"
Me: Irving the Berlinator!
Mike: I'm totally out of mid-century composers already.
Me: I've been trying to make a "Tin Pan Allez" joke, but I got nothing. Maybe it could be their battle cry.
Mike: It's very funny, except for the fact that it involves French. And a pun. Are French puns more or less acceptable than English puns?
Me: That's a question I hoped never to ponder.

Moses Hogan Chorale

Bobby: They are the whitest black choir ever!

Job Security

Scott: It's printing upside-down on the back.
Me: Ah, yeah...remember yesterday when I showed you how to fix that?
Scott: You did it so fast, I didn't see what you did.
Me: That's how I maintain my value.

Douglas Coupland (Again)

Mike: I'm so glad he's working.
Me: ...elsewhere.
Mike: Yeah, the British can have totally him. Although he's running out of English-speaking countries. I guess Australia is next.
Me: Sure would be a shame if a shark got 'im. Yep. Damn shame.
Mike: I hear they got a whole lot of deadly poisonous reptiles and insects down there. Maybe we should book him on a tour of the Outback. Ya know, as a present.
Me: That's thoughtful, that is.
Mike: We're very appreciative of his work. Perhaps a bottle of raw-meat scented cologne would go nice as well.
Me: Or a big jar of honey and a big jar of ants.
Mike: The stinging is how they tell him they want to be his special friend.
Me: Venom = love. Remember that for Valentine's Day.
Mike: Here, honey, I got you this diamond...back!

Be Careful What You Wish For

Joel: Know why I'm so excited?
Me: No.
Joel: My daughter's looking at a house tonight, and it's three blocks from me.
Me: Man, you'll be babysitters for life.
Joel: I hope so!!!

If, Then

Me: You know why my feet hurt so much?
Greg: Why?
Me: Because I'm so friggin' fat.
Greg: Man, causality's a bitch.

(Revised)

Beth: I'm not dating these changes because it's still today.
Me: Then you need to time-stamp them.
Beth: Oh, shut up.

I Can't Win!

COL: Sarah!
Me: Hey, sir. Uh...my grad school application is due next Friday.
COL: Next Friday.
Me: When you're out of town. Have you had a chance to...
COL: Believe it or not, it's on my calendar: Sarah Recommendation, today, three o'clock.
Me: I believe it.
COL: Of course, I've bumped it back for three days straight...
Me: Well, I'm just going to not nag, then. *attempt to flee*
COL: Wait a minute, what's this leave form? Twenty-nine days?
Me: Uh...yes, sir.
COL: Where the hell are you going?
Me: Oh, gosh. Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Estonia, Russia...
COL: Okay, well, obviously, we need to see if...if we can live without you for that long.
Me: Oh, man! For the letter, I need you to think you can't survive without me, and for the leave form, I need you to think it's no big deal if I disappear for a month.
COL: Heh.

The Rambler

Doug: How much can I give you to erase that message I just left you?
Me: I haven't even listened to it.
Doug: Maybe it's not money that you want...
Me: See, now I have to listen to my voice mail. I was just going to let it ferment.
Doug: Oh, man. Let's just say I was sufficiently embarassed when I hung up the phone.

Me: Shut up.

Anchors Aweigh, Barkeep!

Me: Hey, you know the B section of the Navy hymn?
Beth: No.
Me: Heave a ho there sailor, everybody drink up while you may
Heave a ho there sailor, for you're gonna sail at break of day
Drink away, drink away, for you sail at break of day, hey!

Beth: That's probably why we don't know it.
Me: You reckon?

A Choice

Me: Do you have something hip planned for the evening, or can you mop the kitchen floor?
Greg: Aw, man!
Me: Hey, you could've said you had something hip planned.
Greg: I have something hip planned.
Me: Yeah? What?
Greg: Uh...
Me: Think fast.

Joint Concert

COL: That'll be a nice tune to do down with Dallas. See if we can do some structural damage to their hall.
Me: Man, I remember doing 1812 with them, with six tubas pointed at my head.
COL: Who won?
Me: The tubas.

Protests

Mike: I oppose this war, and I have decided that I am going to eat a delicious, crispy Kit Kat for every day that it continues! Bring the troops home! *munch*
Me: Each of these Skittles represents an Afghan orphan!
Mike: This 7 day protest-cruise may appear to be a wonderful tropical vacation, but each morning at the buffet I weep for those brave Americans suffering from PTSD. And the number is constantly growing. Ooh, shrimp! I mean...*sob*
Me: Spa Sit-In Continues: organizers demand a pedicure to symbolize each amputee.
Mike: Today we stand together against the murder of animals for vanity, as we buy up all of these gorgeous, luxurious furs on sale for 50% off!
Me: We refuse all Chinese food until the brave people of Tibet are afforded their God-given freedom. Until then, sushi!
Mike: I will remain locked here in this luxury penthouse suite with only room-service to sustain me until the unlawfully imprisoned members of the Falun Gong are released.
Me: These brave men pledge to smoke a Cuban cigar every day until the prisoners at Guantanamo are released!

I miss all the good lines

Bill: If truth be told, I wouldn't mind wearing a skort.

Seating Arrangements

Juan: I wonder if they make the Republicans sit on the right, and the Democrats on the left.
Me: They probably mix them up so they can all glare at each other.
Juan: And fight over the armrests! "This is mine, damnit!"

...Page Two!

Steve: We shouldn't break between videntes and stellam.
Me: Having seen...*long pause*...the star...
John: Thank you, Paul Harvey.

Ah, Family Vacations

Dan: I told Debbie, "Don't ever make me do this again." I'm retired from spelunking. *pause* I'm also retired from riding a donkey.

What the Blue Lapel Pins Mean

Erica: They're on the blue shuttle bus.
Me: It's a radon detector.
Erica: They're having the veal.

This is what passes for humor around here

Clerk: Do you have a specific date you want the flag flown?
Retiree: I can pick a date? Tell 'em I want it on the fourth of July.
Both: *raucous laughter*
